Witnessing this beautiful, family-centered home water birth in Scottsdale was just what I needed to get myself out of my 2020 self-pity funk. This year has been hard, but this birth reminded me that beauty and love continues to exist among chaos. Babies are still being born all over the world. Mothers and fathers are still being created. Siblings and grandchildren are still being created. Regardless of what is going on in the outside world, love is still growing.
This family hired me for videography only, but I couldn’t help myself from snapping a few photos here and there (with their permission, of course). This was such a supportive birth environment, and it clearly shows in their birth video.
I got the call on a Saturday morning, just as I was waking up for the day. Which is about as good as it gets for a birth worker on call! I arrived to her birth team already in action getting things set up for baby’s arrival. The morning sunlight shining all throughout the house was amazing! Mama had been laboring all night, but knew things would be happening quickly now based on her contractions.
Her birth team consisted of her two midwives, doula, best friend (who is also a professional photographer and took the majority of her birth photos – how awesome is that?!), her husband, their son, and myself. We all held space for her as she let her instincts take the lead. But what was really special, was to see the connection and love between her and her family. Her husband and son were right by her side encouraging her and offering comfort and laughter when she needed it.
